How the dashboard works

Enter any Yahoo Finance ticker — ^DJI, AAPL, SPY, ^GSPC — select a commodity and a time frame, and the dashboard fetches live price data from Yahoo Finance and computes the commodity-denominated value for every trading day in the series.

The conversion formula is straightforward: asset_price_USD ÷ commodity_price_USD = units of commodity the asset could buy. The result strips out fiat inflation and shows how the asset performed in terms of real, scarce raw materials rather than an expanding money supply.

A dual-axis chart overlays the USD price and the commodity price on the same timeline, making it easy to see where the two diverge — and by how much.

Why commodity-denominated valuation?

When central banks expand the money supply, USD-denominated price charts can give the illusion of growth. Priced in gold or oil, the picture often looks very different — the Dow Jones has lost significant real purchasing power versus gold over several multi-decade periods, even as its dollar value soared.

Commodity valuation answers a simpler question: how much real stuff does this asset buy? It is one of the oldest and most honest yardsticks in finance.
